Budget 2008 for Treno Verde

A growing interest towards environmental issues, especially with the younger generation. 23 thousand visitors during the seven stops of Ferrovie dello Stato and Legambiente’s joint project.
30th April 2008

Environmental issues have united Italy from Rome to Padova passing through Salerno, Reggio Calabria, Potenza, Frosinone, Arezzo and Turin. 23 thousand people visited FS and Legambiente’s train. Informative panels and events on board the train attracted the attention of the younger generation towards the issue of renewable energy. And the adults participated to conferences about sustainable mobility and selective waste collection. Round tables discussing local problems of the seven cities allowed to identify and propose realistic solutions to increase and perfect local public service.

Thanks to the equipment on board the train made available by the Istituto Sperimentale and Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, an evaluation of the pollution level could be evaluated in each city. And the participation of local administrators allowed for activities outside the stations. The Tartaruga (Turtle) Trophy, and exiting race between bicycle, bus, car and train which, nowithstanding its age, always come first, because less polluting.

FS’s contribution towards environmental issues allowed for a drastic reduction of pollution. With a 34 percent increase of regional traffic, a doubling of the ‘modal share on rail’ in all major metropolitan areas, the next few years will witness a 15% reduction of main polluting emissions and a 40% reduction of greenhouse gas.

In fact a freight train can transport as many goods as 50 lorries, with 77% less greenhouse gas emission. And, in the last 10 years, greenhouse gas emissions produced by trains in Italy have fallen by 19%. A result which has exceeded those targets set out by the Kyoto Protocol, thanks to the revamping of the fleet and increase of freight train capacity.
