FS Group in Europe

An increased presence on the international market is without a doubt one of the mainstays of Trenitalia Cargo’s strategy. International traffic constitutes 55% of overall transported goods. 49% of transported tons is via intermodal system and steel is the most representative market for conventional transport (28%).

As for each crossings through the Alps, the presence of Trenitalia Cargo is around 21% on North-South axis, 10% on East Axis and 8% on the West Axis

In Europe not only does Trenitalia Cargo cooperate with its foreign counterparts, but it also operates in partnership with other Group companies operating in the freight transport sector, such as Trenitalia Logistics France and Pol-Rail, Alpe Adria and German based TX Logistik.

The German company, particularly, owned for 100% by Trenitalia, is a strategic partner that has consolidated its position internationally.

The objective of Trenitalia is not only to develop its traffic on the North-South European axis, but also to point to emerging East European countries through the companies Pol-Rail and Italia Logistica.

An important added value is given by other FS Group companies specialized in intermodal transports, like Cemat and Italcontainer, operating on the international scenario.

Regarding infrastructures, the Bologna-Verona doubling is essential for the integration in the main corridors of the TEN, Trans-European Network. This is part of the Trans-European Corridor 1 (Berlin-Palermo) and crosses the Corridor 5, which shall connect Eastern to Western Europe. The infrastructure will increase transportation capacity on the route and will reduce journey times for freight trains.
